September 5th, 2008 · No Comments

A SPOKESWOMAN FOR THE MOUNT WASHINGTON VALLEY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SAYS RESPONSES FROM VALLEY BUSINESSES TO AN INFORMAL SURVEY INDICATE A
CONSENSUS THAT PEOPLE STAYED HOME DURING JULY BECAUSE OF BAD WEATHER,
HIGH GAS PRICES AND ECONOMIC CONCERNS – WITH LODGING RESERVATIONS THAT
CONTINUE TO INCREASINGLY BE “LAST-MINUTE” – BUT THAT MOST BUSINESSES
REPORTED A STRONG AUGUST AND LABOR DAY WEEKEND DUE TO FALLING GAS
PRICES, SUNNY WEATHER – AND A SURGE IN VISITORS FROM CANADA AND EUROPE.

MARTI MAYNE SAYS RETAILERS WEIGHED IN TO THE SURVEY WITH MIXED
RESULTS, MANY ASKING NOT BE NAMED.

STORY LAND SPOKESMAN JIM MILLER SAYS LABOR DAY WEEKEND AT THE
CHILDRENS’ THEME PARKE WAS VERY WELL ATTENDED, QUOTE “RIGHT ON PAR WITH
LAST YEAR’S HOLIDAY WEEKEND.” MILLER ATTRIBUTES THIS YEAR’S ADDITION OF
THE CIRCUS AS A BIG DRAW. WILDCAT MARKETING DIRECTOR THOMAS PRINDLE
REPORTS NUMBERS AT THE ZIP RIDER ATTRACTION MORE THAN TRIPLED FOR LABOR DAY.

MAYNE SAYS SURVEY RESPONDERS ARE OPTIMISTIC ABOUT A BUSY FALL IN THE
VALLEY, WITH AN INCREASE OF CANADIAN AND INTERNATIONAL VISITORS EXPECTED
TO CONTINUE THROUGH FALL FOLIAGE SEASON AND THE WINTER MONTHS.

September 5th, 2008 · No Comments

U-S SENATOR JOHN SUNUNU SAYS HE’LL CONTINUE TO FIGHT FOR LEGISLATION
THAT ADDRESSES WHAT HE SAYS IS ONE OF THE MAIN FACTORS FORCING
OBSTETRICIANS TO LEAVE RURAL AREAS LIKE NEW HAMPSHIRE’S NORTH COUNTRY –
THE QUOTE “EXPLODING COST OF MEDICAL LIABILITY INSURANCE.”

SUNUNU DISCUSSED THE ISSUE WITH NURSE MIDWIVES AND MOTHERS AT THE WHITE
MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY
HEALTH CENTER IN CONWAY DURING A MORNING STOP

, CREATING A THREE-YEAR STATUTE OF LIMITATION TO ENCOURAGE SPEEDY RESOLUTION OF CLAIMS – AND LIMITING FEES PAID TO LAWYERS.

ON THE ISSUE OF HIGH ENERGY COSTS, THE SENATOR SAYS THE TOPIC SHOULD BE
AT THE TOP OF THE PRIORITY LIST WHEN THE SENATE RE-CONVENES IN
WASHINGTON NEXT WEEK. HE BLAMES THE SENATE’S DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP FOR
NOT ALLOWING AN UP OR DOWN VOTE ON THE ISSUE OF OFFSHORE DRILLING
WHICH HE SUPPORTS - BEFORE THE SENATE’S SUMMER RECESS.

SUNUNU ALSO STOPPED YESTERDAY AT THE GIBSON CENTER IN NORTH CONWAY AND THE WHITTIER COVERED BRIDGE IN OSSIPEE. HE HELPED SECURE MORE THAN

Woman Sues After Being Blocked From Opening Studio Teaching Pole Dancing

September 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

A Pennsylvania woman has filed a federal lawsuit claming her First Amendment right to free expression was denied when a township refused to allow her to open a dance studio that would have included classes in pole-dancing, power lap dance and strip tease. Adams Township officials refused an occupancy permit to Stephanie Babines, charging the studio would have been a sexually oriented business. The lawsuit states, however, that all classes are taught and performed fully-clothed, no spectators are allowed, and men can’t take the classes. Babines said in a statement, “This is not a strip joint or a gentlemen’s club.” Township code enforcer Gary Peaco told Babines in March that her permit was denied because he’d received information that would classify her studio as an “adult business,” and also because of information in her advertising and website. Peaco also testified at an appeal hearing in May, saying he didn’t need to interview Babines because her website’s, quote, “pink-and-black color scheme … and the high-heeled shoe in her logo” indicated to him that she planned to run a sexually-oriented business.
