Box Office Recap – 09/30/2019

Universal and DreamWorks’ animated Abominable ruled the box office this weekend with $20.85 million in box office receipts in North America, and $29.7 million worldwide.

“We saw a great opportunity for not just an opening weekend, but a strong corridor going forward,” Jim Orr, Universal’s president of domestic distribution, told Variety. “With this particular weekend, kids have been back in school for some time and routines have settled down.”

Director Jill Culton took on Abominable, and became the first woman to made an animated film for a major studio.

Judy, starring Renee Zellweger in a much-buzzed about starring role as Judy Garland, snagged $3 million across just 461 screens. Judy will expand across the country next week.

Downtown Abbey slipped into second place with $14.5 million, and J. Lo’s Hustlers snagged No. 3 with $11.47 million.
