Box Office Recap – 10/07/2019

‘JOKER’ SETS NEW B.O. RECORD – (10/07/2019)

Joker laughed all the way to the bank, despite controversy over depictions of violence in the Joaquin Phoenix top-lining film.

The Warner Bros. film broke all-time records for an October opener, bringing in an estimated $93 million from ticket sales in its first weekend out. Spider-Man spinoff Venom held the previous record with $80 million.

Because of concerns raised by family members of the 2012 mass shooting at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado, additional security measures were taken at certain theaters, and some chains banned costumes.

Still audience members came out in droves, and the opening weekend exceeded industry projections and its $55 million budget. Family friendly Abominable landed in second with $12 million, and Downton Abbey closed out the top three with $8 million.

Four Arrested on Drug Trafficking

Four men have been arrested in a case involving a naked man, kidnapping, firearms and drugs. The Cumberland County Sheriff’s office say they’ve arrested four men after a 39-year-old male victim was taken from his Naples residence at gunpoint. He was then allegedly put into the trunk of a car, driven to another location, and told to strip. Fearing for his life, the victim alleges he ran through the woods as the suspects shot at him. Police say they arrested the four suspects in Windham, Maine on charges of trafficking in scheduled drugs. Additional charges are possible. The victim was taken to CMMC in Lewiston for gunshot wounds where he remains in a stable condition.
